After an accident, many drivers are told by their insurance company where to take their car. It can sound like a requirement. It is not. In Michigan, you have the right to choose where your vehicle is repaired.
What is a Direct Repair Program (DRP)?
Many insurers have agreements with networks of body shops, often called Direct Repair Programs or "preferred shops." The shop agrees to certain pricing and procedures, and the insurer sends work their way. These programs can be convenient, but the shop also has an ongoing business relationship with the insurer that is paying the bill.
Your rights as a Michigan driver
- You can choose any licensed repair facility, not just one on your insurer's list.
- Your insurer can recommend a shop, but it cannot require you to use it.
- Your insurer is still responsible for paying a reasonable cost of repair under your policy.
Why the choice matters
The shop you choose decides how thoroughly your car is inspected, whether hidden damage is found and repaired, what parts are used, and how carefully manufacturer repair procedures are followed. Those things affect your safety and your car's value.
How to choose a shop

- Ask how they handle supplements when hidden damage is found.
- Ask about towing and rental assistance.
- Choose a shop that will communicate with you, not just your insurer.
